Basil Varieties – Flavor, Aroma, and Beauty for Every Garden

At Arcadia Refuge Farm, we offer a carefully curated selection of basil varieties, each bringing its own unique flavor, aroma, and appearance to your garden and kitchen. Whether you're looking for classic Italian flavors, spicy-sweet accents, or beautiful ornamental herbs, our basil collection has something for every gardener and cook.

Our Basil Varieties:

  • Red Rubin Basil
A stunning dark purple Italian large-leaf type with high yields and excellent flavor. Its flat, 3" leaves and purple flowers make a bold statement in both the garden and on the plate. Use the intensely flavored leaves and edible flowers for garnishing drinks, salads, soups, pastas, and desserts.
    Height: 18–24”

  • Greco a Palla Basil
A compact, dome-shaped Greek basil with a spicy-sweet flavor. Growing just 8–14" tall, this tidy globe of 3/4" leaves is perfect for small spaces, pots, or garden beds. Slow to bolt and easy to harvest, it offers convenient garnishes that can be pinched directly from the plant.

  • Tuscany Basil
A beautiful, lettuce-leaf type basil with large, bright-green leaves (3–5") that are ruffled and puckered. Its mild basil flavor with hints of anise pairs well with a variety of dishes. With better-than-average downy mildew tolerance, Tuscany basil thrives even when conditions challenge other varieties.
    Height: 12–16”

  • Cinnamon Basil
Offering a sweet, cinnamon aroma, this tall basil (26–30") stands out with violet stems, veining, and lavender blooms. Its 2" leaves add a warm, spicy note to your dishes, while the edible flowers bring a hint of mint, anise, and cinnamon. Beautiful in casual flower bouquets as well as your favorite recipes.

Growing Information for All Basil Varieties

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours daily)

  • Soil Needs: Well-draining, nutrient-rich soil

  • Watering: Water consistently, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged

  • Spacing: 8–12 inches apart, depending on the variety’s size

  • Harvesting: Pinch leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent bolting

  • Companion Planting: Basil thrives near tomatoes, peppers, and other garden vegetables

Gardener’s Tips for Basil:

  • Pinch off flower buds to extend the harvest season and keep leaves tender.

  • Harvest leaves frequently, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.

  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Use fresh or preserve by drying or making basil oil, pesto, or infused vinegar.

Perfect For:

  • Home cooks who love using fresh herbs in their meals

  • Container gardeners with limited space but big culinary ambitions

  • Gardeners seeking beautiful, aromatic plants that also serve as pollinator attractants

From the deep purple hues of Red Rubin to the warm spice of Cinnamon Basil, our basil varieties bring flavor, beauty, and versatility to every garden. Grown with care at Arcadia Refuge Farm, each plant is ready to elevate your dishes and delight your senses.
